Umina Beach – Kitchen

The brief

To design a kitchen/dining room for a family of 7, with 5 children ageing between newborn and 16. The couple love entertaining and want to be able to work in the kitchen whilst still socialising with their guests.

Cluttered benches are a major no-no for this couple and so the ability to conceal any preparation mess when entertaining is desirable. The 4th child as a toddler loved to open all the kitchen cupboards pull out all the items inside. They requested baby proofing the new layout to prevent the newborn re-enacting this habit. They have a passion for cooking, so ample storage for their condiments and kitchen tools is essential.

The solution

  • An open kitchen/diner allowing easy relaxed entertaining
  • The island bench houses 7 bar stools which allows for guests to sit and socialise while the couple is still working in the kitchen, but also doubles as a casual meals area that can seat the whole family.
  • Long linear drawers are used throughout the kitchen providing easy access to all the storage space. The linear drawers are finished with a concealed shark nose handle which proved to be an excellent solution to babyproofing the kitchen. Once the couple’s little munchkin was old enough to be able to open these drawers, they were also old enough to understand right and wrong.
  • Specialised storage for oils, sauces and herbs and spices were created adjacent to the cooktop for ease of cooking function
  • A wide double oven and 1 1/2 dishwashers were incorporated into the design catering for the families love of cooking and entertaining
  • A butler’s pantry concealed the fridges, sink, dishwashers and crockery storage, keeping the kitchen benches and main kitchen space free from clutter. The butler’s pantry can be easily concealed with a sliding door hiding any entertaining prep mess.
